The Piñata Game
Have you ever played the piñata game? A piñata is a papier-mâché sculpture filled with candy. Piñatas are colorful and usually made to look like animals. The piñata is hung up high.
People at the party take turns trying to hit it with a stick. It's not easy, though.

피냐타 게임
피냐타 게임을 해본 적이 있나요? 피냐타는 사탕으로 채워진 종이 펄프 조각품입니다. 피냐타는 다채롭고 보통 동물처럼 보입니다. 피냐타는 높이 걸려 있습니다.
파티에 참석한 사람들은 차례로 막대기로 치려고 합니다. 하지만 쉽지는 않습니다.

The person who is trying to hit the piñata has to keep his or her eyes closed.
Stand back! When the piñata breaks, the candy falls out. Then everyone runs into the middle to get a piece!

피냐타를 치려는 사람은 눈을 감아야 합니다.
물러서세요! 피냐타가 깨지면 사탕이 떨어집니다. 그러면 모두가 가운데로 달려가서 사탕을 하나씩 가져갑니다!

Piñata History
Piñatas have been around for hundreds of years. Yet no one is really sure where the piñata game started.
It may have come from China.
A famous explorer named Marco Polo may have seen piñatas when he traveled to China 800 years ago.
Marco Polo was from Italy. He may have brought piñatas back home with him. After Marco Polo returned home, people in Europe began to play the piñata game.
Today, the piñata game is often played in Mexico and in the
United States.

Making a Piñata
Would you like to learn how to make a piñata? Hector will show you. Hector knows how to make piñatas. He's going to show his friend Devon how to make a piñata.
Hector has gathered all the supplies:
• A large balloon
• A big bowl
• A batch of papier-mâché paste
• Strips of newspaper
• Triangles of colorful tissue paper
• A glue stick
• String
• Tape
• Scissors
• Candy

"First, we need to tell everyone how to make the paste. It's easy. All you need is sugar, flour, and water!" says Hector.
Paste Ingredients:
• one cup of flour
• two cups of cold water
• two cups of boiling water
• three tablespoons of sugar
"My mother helped me with this,"
Hector says. "She mixed the flour into two cups of cold water. Then, she poured this mixture into the boiling water. She let that boil for a minute on the stove. Then, she turned off the stove and added the sugar. As the mixture cools, it becomes a thick paste.
Then, it's ready," Hector says.

"먼저, 우리는 모든 사람에게 반죽을 만드는 방법을 알려야 합니다. 간단합니다. 설탕, 밀가루, 물만 있으면 됩니다!" 헥터가 말합니다.
반죽 재료:
• 밀가루 1컵
• 찬물 2컵
• 끓는 물 2컵
• 설탕 3큰술

Day One
"Blow up the balloon, Devon," Hector says. "Now, tie it off and put it in the bowl. It's time to add the flour paste!
First, pick up a strip of newspaper and drag it through the paste. Now, put it on the balloon like this. Great!"
"Should we do the same again?"
Devon asks.

첫째 날
"풍선을 불어, 데번." 헥터가 말했다. "이제 풍선을 묶어 그릇에 넣어. 밀가루 반죽을 넣을 시간이다!
먼저 신문지를 한 조각 집어 반죽 속으로 끌어넣어. 이제 풍선에 이렇게 올려. 좋다!"
"다시 한 번 해볼까?"
데번이 묻는다.

"Yes," says Hector. "Do it until the balloon is covered with one layer of paste. Don't cover the spot where the balloon is tied. I'll tell you why later."
"What do we do now?" asks Devon.
"Well, now we have to let it dry,"
Hector answers.
"How long will that take?" asks
Devon.
"It could take until tomorrow," Hector says. "We can read while we wait."
"We can play baseball, too," Devon says. "It will be good practice."

"그래요." 헥터가 말했다. "풍선이 페이스트 한 겹으로 덮일 때까지 하세요. 풍선을 묶은 자리는 덮지 마세요. 이유는 나중에 말씀드릴게요."
"이제 뭘 해야 하나요?" 데번이 물었다.
"음, 이제 말려야 해요." 헥터가 대답했다.
"얼마나 걸릴까요?" 데번이 물었다.
"내일까지 걸릴 수도 있어요." 헥터가 말했다. "기다리는 동안 책을 읽을 수도 있어요."
"야구도 할 수 있어요." 데번이 말했다. "좋은 연습이 될 거예요."

Day Two
"Well, we waited 24 hours," Devon says. "Is it dry?"
"It is as dry as can be," Hector answers. "Now let's tape the string onto the piñata. We'll use the string to hang it when we're done."
"Let's use the comics for the second layer," Devon says.
"OK, we'll let this layer dry overnight.
We'll add the third layer tomorrow.
Then we can decorate it," says Hector.
"That will give me a chance to beat you in basketball," says Devon.

2일차
"음, 우리는 24시간을 기다렸어요." 데번이 말한다. "말랐어요?"
"아주 말랐어요." 헥터가 대답한다. "이제 끈을 피냐타에 붙이자. 다 끝나면 끈으로 걸어둘게."
"두 번째 층은 만화로 하자." 데번이 말한다.
"좋아요, 이 층을 밤새도록 말리도록 하죠.
내일 세 번째 층을 더할게.
그러면 장식할 수 있어요." 헥터가 말한다.
"그러면 농구에서 널 이길 기회가 생기겠지." 데번이 말한다.


13.

Day Three
"Now, there are three layers of dry paste and paper on the balloon," Hector says. "We can pop the balloon and take it out. Then, we need to make the hole bigger. Cut away, Devon!"

3일차
"이제 풍선에 마른 반죽과 종이가 세 겹 겹쳤어요." 헥터가 말한다. "풍선을 터뜨리고 꺼낼 수 있어요. 그런 다음 구멍을 더 크게 만들어야 해요. 잘라내, 데본!"

"Now we get to have fun decorating the piñata," Hector says. "Starting at the top, we glue the tissue paper around the piñata all the way to the bottom. Make sure we don't let any newspaper show."
"This is going to look good," Devon
says.
"Now the piñata looks good," Hector says. "We can pour in the candy.
Last, we glue some tissue paper over the top. This keeps the candy inside."
"We're done!" Devon says.
"Now we have to hang it up." Hector says.
"Then what?" Devon asks.

"이제 피냐타를 장식하는 재미를 볼 수 있게 됐어요." 헥터가 말했다. "위에서부터 피냐타를 따라 티슈 페이퍼를 바닥까지 붙입니다. 신문이 보이지 않게 해야 해요."
"이게 잘 어울릴 거예요." 데본이
말했다.
"이제 피냐타가 잘 어울릴 거예요." 헥터가 말했다. "사탕을 부을 수 있어요.
마지막으로 티슈 페이퍼를 위에 붙입니다. 이렇게 하면 사탕이 안에 들어 있어요."
"끝났어요!" 데본이 말했다.
"이제 걸어야 해요." 헥터가 말했다.
"그럼 뭐예요?" 데본이 물었다.

"Then we'll have a piñata party!"
shouts Hector.

"그럼 피냐타 파티를 열자!"
헥터가 소리친다.
