I pulled back the blinds and stared into the wet night. I shivered, glad to be indoors. When Dad got home, maybe we'd play video football. This was a night to play games and drink hot chocolate.
나는 블라인드를 젖히고 젖은 밤을 응시했다. 나는 떨었고, 실내에 있는 것이 기뻤다. 아빠가 집에 오면 비디오 축구를 할 수도 있을 것이다. 이것은 게임을 하고 핫 초콜릿을 마실 밤이었다.

Dad's car pulled into the driveway. I ran to the door.
He stepped inside and shook rain from his hair.
아빠의 차가 차도로 들어섰다. 나는 문으로 달려갔다.
그는 안으로 들어와 머리카락에서 빗물을 털어냈다.

"It's froggy out."
"It doesn't look foggy," I said.
"No, it's froggy. See for yourself."

"밖은 개구리 같아."
"개구리처럼 보이지 않는 것 같은데요." 내가 말했다.
"아니, 개구리야. 직접 확인해 봐."

I opened the door two inches.
"You won't see anything like that," Dad said. "We have to go out there."
나는 문을 2인치 열었다.
"그렇게 해선 어떤것도 볼 수 없을 거야." 아빠가 말했다. "우리가 그곳으로 나가야 해."

"I'm not going anywhere!" I said.
"You don't want to miss this."
"It's cold." I said. "It's wet."
"아무데도 안 갈 거야!" 내가 말했다.
"이거 놓치고 싶지 않을 거야."
"추워." 내가 말했다. "젖었어."

Dad smiled as if he had a secret. "It feels cold to us, but it's warm and inviting to a frog."
아빠는 비밀이 있는 듯 미소를 지었다. "우리한테는 추워 보이지만 개구리한테는 따뜻하고 매력적이야."

What was all this talk about frogs?
개구리에 대한 이 모든 이야기는 뭐였을까?

Dad took off his jacket. I smiled. He was going to stay inside. I said, "Do you want to play video football?"
아빠는 재킷을 벗었다. 나는 미소를 지었다. 아빠는 안에 있을 거였다. 나는 "비디오 축구 할래?"라고 말했다.

Dad took his raincoat from the closet.
아빠는 옷장에서 레인코트를 꺼냈다.

I said, "Or we could play video golf." It was his favorite.
He kept smiling. "Are you coming?" he asked.
I stared at him, then sighed and put on my raincoat.
Dad took a flashlight and gave me one. He led the way out the door.
We pointed our flashlights down the sidewalk.
Things moved. Little creatures hopped on the ground.
"Hey, look at this one." Dad crouched and shined his light on a green frog the size of his thumb.
The frog jumped, its four legs sticking straight out.
It pulled its legs in close to land — PLOP!
That was pretty neat.
I waved my light ahead. I saw something and hurried to it.
Just a rock.
"Here's another," Dad called.

나는 "아니면 비디오 골프를 할 수도 있어."라고 말했다. 그가 가장 좋아하는 것이었다.
그는 계속 미소를 지었다. "가실 건가요?" 그가 물었다.
나는 그를 응시한 다음 한숨을 쉬고 비옷을 입었다.
아빠가 손전등을 가져다가 나에게 주었다. 그는 문 밖으로 길을 안내했다.
우리는 보도를 따라 손전등을 비췄다.
사물들이 움직였다. 작은 생물들이 땅에서 껑충껑충 뛰었다.
"이거 봐." 아빠가 웅크리고 엄지손가락 크기의 녹색 개구리에게 빛을 비췄다.
개구리가 뛰어올랐고, 네 다리가 곧게 뻗었다.
다리를 땅에 가까이 당겨서 - 퐁!
꽤 멋졌다.
나는 내 불빛을 앞으로 흔들었다. 뭔가를 보고 서둘러 그쪽으로 갔다.
그냥 돌멩이일 뿐이었다.
"또 있어." 아빠가 불렀다.

But I wanted to find a frog by myself. I spotted something.
Just a leaf.
하지만 저는 개구리를 혼자 찾고 싶었습니다. 뭔가를 발견했죠.
나뭇잎 하나뿐이었어요.

Dad noticed a green frog with brown speckles on the road. After making sure no cars were coming, he stepped into the street. He slid his finger under the frog's chin.
아빠는 길에서 갈색 얼룩이 있는 녹색 개구리를 발견했습니다. 차가 오지 않는지 확인한 후, 아빠는 거리로 나섰습니다. 그는 개구리 턱 아래로 손가락을 넣었습니다.

"What are you doing?" I asked. The frogs looked really cool, but I wouldn't touch one. Yuck.
"뭐하는 거야?" 내가 물었습니다. 개구리는 정말 멋져 보였지만, 저는 건드리지 않을 겁니다. 역겨움.

"It will get hit by a car if it stays here."
Double yuck.
"여기 있으면 차에 치일 거야."
두 배 역겨움.

He moved the frog to a neighbor's lawn. We walked on.
I found my first frog on a driveway. A bright-green one with shiny skin. I wondered what it would feel like.
아빠는 개구리를 이웃집 잔디밭으로 옮겼습니다. 우리는 계속 걸었습니다.
저는 차도에서 처음으로 개구리를 발견했습니다. 반짝이는 피부를 가진 밝은 녹색 개구리였습니다. 어떤 느낌일지 궁금했습니다.

I could see the frog breathing.
I pictured a car running over it. Yuck a hundred times.
개구리가 숨쉬는 게 보였습니다.
차가 개구리를 덮치는 모습이 떠올랐습니다. 역겨움이 백 번이나 났습니다.

I said, "Dad, can you move this one?"
"You do it.
나는 "아빠, 이거 옮길 수 있어?"라고 말했다.
"네가 해."

I stared at the frog.
I didn't want to touch it.
I didn't want it to get squashed.
I reached down. It jumped through my fingers.
I tried again. Cupping one hand around the frog, I scooped it up with the other hand.
Its skin felt cold and soft. The frog moved. Its legs tickled.
나는 개구리를 응시했다.
나는 개구리를 만지고 싶지 않았다.
나는 개구리가 으깨지는 것을 원하지 않았다.
나는 손을 내밀었다. 개구리는 내 손가락 사이로 뛰어들었다.
나는 다시 시도했다. 한 손으로 개구리를 움켜쥐고 다른 손으로 개구리를 움켜쥐었다.
그 개구리의 피부는 차갑고 부드러웠다. 개구리가 움직였다. 다리가 간지러웠다.

I walked to the grass and held out my hand. The frog climbed up my wrist. I laughed. Then I gently brushed the frog off onto the grass.
나는 풀밭으로 걸어가 손을 내밀었다. 개구리가 내 손목을 올라갔다. 나는 웃었다. 그리고 나는 개구리를 부드럽게 풀밭 위로 쓸어내렸다.

We walked a couple of blocks. We found lots of frogs-brown ones, green ones, spotted ones. I got better at finding them. If they were in the road, we moved them when traffic was clear. I actually started to like picking them up.
우리는 몇 블록을 걸었습니다. 우리는 많은 개구리를 발견했습니다. 갈색 개구리, 녹색 개구리, 얼룩덜룩한 개구리. 나는 개구리를 찾는 데 능숙해졌습니다. 개구리가 도로에 있으면 교통량이 없을 때 옮겼습니다. 사실 개구리를 집어 올리는 것을 좋아하기 시작했습니다.

The rain soaked through my jeans. I blew my nose into a soggy tissue. I was ready to go home.
비가 내 청바지를 적셨다. 나는 젖은 티슈에 코를 풀었다. 나는 집에 갈 준비가 되었다.

Then I saw something moving near a stone wall.
Something bigger than a frog.
그때 나는 돌담 근처에서 움직이는 무언가를 보았다.
개구리보다 큰 무언가.

Dad and I shined our lights and crouched.
"Is it a lizard?" I asked.
아빠와 나는 불빛을 비추고 웅크리고 있었다.
"도마뱀이야?" 내가 물었다.

"No, it's a salamander." Dad said. "See how its skin looks moist and smooth? Lizards are dry and scaly."
"아니, 도롱뇽이야." 아빠가 말했다. "피부가 촉촉하고 매끈해 보이는 걸 봐? 도마뱀은 건조하고 비늘이 있어."

"Hey, I just realized something," I said. "The animals out tonight-frogs and salamanders-are amphibians." We'd learned about amphibians in school.
"야, 방금 뭔가 깨달았어." 내가 말했다. "오늘 밤 밖에 있는 동물들, 개구리와 도롱뇽은 양서류야." 우리는 학교에서 양서류에 대해 배웠다.

"Great observation," Dad said.
"훌륭한 관찰력이네." 아빠가 말했다.

The salamander moved with a wiggle and looked like an S flipping back and forth. I touched it with one finger. Its skin felt smooth.
도롱뇽은 꿈틀거리며 움직이며 앞뒤로 뒤집히는 S자처럼 보였다. 나는 한 손가락으로 그것을 만졌다. 그 피부는 매끈했다.

Then the salamander crawled into the ditch.
그러자 도롱뇽이 도랑 속으로 기어들었다.

"That was fun," Dad said, pushing wet hair out of his eyes.
"You ready to go back?"
"재밌었어." 아빠가 눈에서 젖은 머리카락을 밀어내며 말했다.
"돌아갈 준비 됐어?"

I nodded. "Yeah. What a great froggy night."
나는 고개를 끄덕였다. "그래. 정말 멋진 개구리 밤이었어."

Dad smiled. "I'm glad you came out."
아빠가 미소를 지었다. "네가 나와서 기쁘다."

As we walked toward home, I said, "This night needs just one thing to make it perfect."
집으로 걸어가는 동안 나는 말했다. "이 밤은 완벽해지려면 단 한 가지가 필요해."

"What's that?" asked Dad.
"Hot chocolate."
"뭐야?" 아빠가 물었다.
"핫 초콜릿."

Why Amphibians Seem to Like the Rain
양서류가 비를 좋아하는 이유

Frogs, salamanders, and other amphibians need damp or wet air to survive. These animals breathe through their skin in addition to their lungs, and moisture helps their skin breathe. Most amphibians live on land as adults but lay their eggs in water.
