2.

Snort snuffle sniff uuggchooo!
콧물 훌쩍훌쩍 으악츄!
(코를 들이마시고 훌쩍거리고 킁클거리고)


My sister snores. Sometimes Emily sounds as if she's blowing her nose. Other times she sounds like a train whistle. Snort, sniff, snuffle, uuuggchooo, uuggchooo! Last night was the loudest night ever.
I tried sleeping with my earmuffs on, but they weren't very comfortable.
내 여동생이 코를 골어요. 때때로 Emily는 코를 풀고 있는 것처럼 들립니다. 어떤 때는 기차 휘파람 소리처럼 들립니다. 콧물, 냄새, 훌쩍, 으악츄, 으악츄! 어젯밤은 역대 가장 시끄러운 밤이었습니다.
나는 귀마개를 끼고 자려고 했는데 별로 편하지 않았어요.

"May I move into the guest room?"
"내가 손님방으로 들어가도 될까요?"

I thought about my problem all day. At dinner, I asked my mom, "May I move into the guest room? Emily snores so much that I can't sleep."
나는 하루 종일 내 문제에 대해 생각했습니다. 저녁 식사 때 엄마에게 "내가 손님방으로 들어가도 될까요? 에밀리는 코를 너무 골아서 잠을 못 자요."라고 물었습니다.

"I do not snore," Emily said, "But I would love having my own room. Jessica is messy."
"저는 코를 골지 않아요" Emily가 말했다. "하지만 저는 제 방을 갖고 싶어요. Jessica는 지저분해요."

Mom said, "We'll give it a try. Jessica can sleep in the guest room tonight."
엄마는 "한번 해보자. 제시카는 오늘 밤 손님방에서 자면 돼."

We raced up the stairs to our room. I said to Emily, "I am not messy."
우리는 계단을 타고 우리 방으로 올라갔습니다. 나는 에밀리에게 말했다.
"나는 지저분하지 않다."

"Mom, what's that scary sound?"
"엄마, 저 무서운 소리는 뭐예요?"


Emily raised her eyebrows and looked around the room. She patted my lumpy bed. She picked up my pajamas from the floor, and peered at the toys stuffed under my bed. "Face it, Jess, you're messy."
에밀리는 눈썹을 치켜올리고 방을 둘러보았습니다. 그녀는 내 울퉁불퉁한 침대를 두드렸다. 그녀는 바닥에 있는 내 잠옷을 집어 들고 내 침대 밑에 채워져 있는 장난감들을 살펴보았습니다. "사실을 직면해, 제스, 너는 지저분해."

"Well, I would rather be messy than snore." I stomped out of our room.
"글쎄, 난 코를 고는 것보다 지저분한 편이 낫겠어." 나는 우리 방에서 뛰쳐나왔다.

At eight o'clock, Mom tucked me into bed. Later, I heard a loud rumbling noise. "Mom, what's that scary sound?" I called.
8시에 엄마는 나를 침대에 눕혔습니다. 나중에 나는 큰 우르릉거리는 소리를 들었다. "엄마, 저 무서운 소리는 뭐예요?" 나는 전화했다.

"It's only the furnace," she answered.
"그건 보일러일 뿐이야." 그녀가 대답했다.


It's funny that I never heard the furnace when I was sleeping with Emily. My new room was as dark as a dungeon, even with the night-light. I stared at the closet door. I wondered what scary things were hiding in there. "Mom, how long have I been sleeping in my new room?" I called.
내가 에밀리와 자고 있을 때 난로 소리를 한 번도 들어본 적이 없다는게 웃긴다. 내 새 방은 야간 조명에도 불구하고 지하 감옥처럼 어두웠습니다. 나는 옷장 문을 바라보았다. 그 안에는 어떤 무서운 것이 숨어 있을지 궁금했습니다. "엄마, 제가 새 방에서 얼마나 오랫동안 자고 있었나요?" 나는 전화했다.

"One hour," she answered.
“한 시간.” 그녀가 대답했다.

I still had nine more hours until morning. Nine hours seemed like forever. I thought about Emily.
There were a lot of good things about sharing a room with my sister. She would say, "It's not real," when I had a bad dream. And we always whispered secrets late at night.
아침까지는 아직 9시간이나 남았다. 9시간은 영원처럼 느껴졌습니다. 나는 에밀리에 대해 생각했다.
언니와 방을 같이 쓰니 좋은 점이 많았다. 내가 나쁜 꿈을 꾸었을 때 그녀는 "현실이 아니다"라고 말하곤 했습니다. 그리고 우리는 늘 비밀을 속삭였지 늦은 밤

I looked up and saw Emily standing in the doorway.
She said, "I came to borrow your earmuffs. You're yelling so much that I can't sleep."
나는 고개를 들었고 에밀리가 출입구에 서 있는 것을 보았다.
그녀는 "너의 귀마개를 빌리려고 왔어. 너가 너무 소리를 질러서 나는 잠을 잘 수가 없어"라고 말했다.

 

 

6.

"I came to borrow your earmuffs."
"나는 너의 귀마개를 빌리려고 왔어."

I whispered, "I'm a tiny bit scared. Just for tonight, will you sleep with me in my new room?"
나는 속삭였다. "조금 겁이 나. 오늘 밤만은 내 새 방에서 나와 함께 자줄래?"

"OK." she said.
"좋아." 그녀가 말했다.

I raised the covers and Emily climbed in. She handed me my earmuffs from the bedside table.
"Just in case," she said.
내가 이불을 올리자 Emily가 안으로 올라갔습니다. 그녀는 침대 옆 탁자에서 나에게 귀마개를 건네주었습니다.
"만약에 대비해서요." 그녀가 말했다.

I laughed. I love Emily-even when she snores.
나는 웃었다. 나는 에밀리를 사랑해요. 그녀가 코를 골 때조차 말이죠.
