Every day, people who are blind have to get around. They get around without seeing where they are going.

Think about how difficult it would be to brush your teeth if you couldn't see.

You do many things every day.
You don't even think about them.
You brush your teeth. You walk down the hall. But people who are blind have to think about everything they do.

Getting from place to place safely is hard for people who are blind.
They can't see a traffic light change color. They can't see a tree in front of them.

In the 1920s, people started training guide dogs. They trained the dogs to lead their blind owners from place to place.

RULES WHEN YOU SEE A GUIDE DOG AT WORK

• Don't walk on the dog's left side.

A guide dog's biggest job is to keep its owner safe. The owner tells the dog when and where to go. But the dog will not move unless it is safe.
안내견의 가장 큰 임무는 주인의 안전을 지키는 것입니다. 주인은 개에게 언제 어디로 가야할지 알려줍니다. 그러나 개는 안전하지 않으면 움직이지 않을 것입니다.

The colors of a traffic light all look the same to dogs, so guide dogs don't know what the lights mean.

Guide dogs help their owners go to the park. Guide dogs help their owners get on a bus. Guide dogs give their owners the freedom to do many things.
안내견은 주인이 공원에 갈 수 있도록 도와줍니다. 안내견은 주인이 버스에 탑승하는 것을 도와줍니다. 안내견은 주인에게 많은 일을 할 수 있는 자유를 제공합니다.

The law says that guide dogs must be allowed to go anywhere that a person can go.
