Eleven cows lived at the top of Riley Hill. Five were named after flowers: Lily, Poppy, Daisy, Jasmine, and Rose. Three names rhymed: Fred, Ed, and Ted. Two cows were named for their birthday months: May and June. And one cow didn't have a name at all: a brand-new calf born on the first of September

"She's a tiny thing," said Farmer Roy Riley.
The calf wobbled as she tried to stand for the first time.
"What should we name her?" asked Roy's wife,
Farmer Lucille.

"September is too long," said Lucille.
They had enough cows named after flowers.
"What about Francine?" Roy asked.
"Too fancy," said Lucille. "Gretta?"
Roy shook his head. None of the names they came up with seemed quite right.
The next day, the calf still didn't have a name. They decided to ask their neighbors for help.
"She looks like a Tammy," said Mr. Roberts.
"More like a Tina," said Mrs. Roberts.
Little Penny Roberts had a suggestion. "Why don't you have a calf-naming contest? You can invite the town for a picnic on Riley Hill."

"A fine idea!" Roy said.
Lucille agreed.
So Lucille, Roy, and Penny made posters for the picnic. They hung one at Jack's Diner and another in the general store. They posted the third one at the Red Horse Coffee Shop.
All week, the calf-naming picnic was the talk of the town.
At the library, baby-naming books flew off the shelves. Mail carriers took note of the names on envelopes.
On the day of the contest, people carried picnic baskets to the top of Riley Hill. Lucille spread blankets under the apple trees. Roy served hot cider.
Penny brought a silver bell.
"For the calf," she said.
"What a nice gift," said Lucille. She helped Penny fasten it around the little calf's neck.

Everyone was excited to see the calf. And everyone had an idea for her name.
"I like Margaret."
"I think it should be Simone."
"What about Samantha?"
Some people brought lists. Others recited names from memory. One man read names from a telephone book.
Then, in the middle of the excitement, someone shouted, "Where's the calf?"
Roy and Lucille looked around. Lucille gasped. "She wandered off."

Everyone searched behind the trees, between the cows, over the hay, and around the barn. The calf was nowhere to be seen.
"She's disappeared!" the crowd shouted.
"Wait!" Penny cried. She whispered, "Listen."
Everyone hushed.
The wind carried a gentle ring of a bell.
Lucille winked at Penny. "Of course."
Penny followed the faint jingle. The others followed Penny across the hill and beyond the barn. Peeking out from behind a tractor was the little calf.

"You found her!" said Lucille.
"And I may have found her name," Penny said, smiling.
